Ascension of Innocence/What Would Beatrix Think? 2017, Latex paint on canvas over plywood, tire inner tube, color swatches and detritus, 64 x 48 inches
I witnessed a squirrel being struck by a car while crossing the road. Hardly a break light blinked. The gruesome thought of following cars repeatedly striking the dead squirrel persuaded me to retrieve the body from the road. I found the creature seemingly unhurt, perfect in all ways, and still warm to the touch. I wondered, author and illustrator Beatrix Potter, who venerated such innocent creatures, what would she think?
